- Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C) and set an oven rack to the middle position.
- Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or butter.
- Arrange the chicken pieces in a single layer at the bottom of the baking dish.
- In a mixing bowl, combine instant rice, cream of chicken soup, salt, pepper, and water. Stir until well combined.
- Pour the rice and soup mixture over the chicken in the baking dish.
- Distribute small pads of butter evenly over the top of the rice and chicken mixture.
- Bake uncovered for 60–75 minutes until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
- Allow the casserole to cool for approximately 15 minutes before serving.
