Step-by-Step Instructions for Braised White Cabbage
  1. Heat butter in a deep pan over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Sprinkle sugar and stir until golden, about 3 more minutes.
  2. Stir in tomato paste and halved cherry tomatoes. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until tomatoes soften.
  3. Add chopped cabbage to the pan, stirring well with onions and tomatoes. Allow cabbage to reduce in size, about 5 minutes.
  4. Sprinkle salt, black pepper, and broth cube across the cabbage. Add cumin and enough water to just cover cabbage; stir well.
  5. Cover with a lid and reduce heat to low. Let braise for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. After 45 minutes, taste for seasoning and adjust as necessary. If a thicker sauce is desired, stir in dark sauce thickener and cook uncovered for 5 more minutes.
